Friday 9th October
First Capital Connect decided to remind me why I hate them so much. Signalling problems at Blackfriars caused a 35 minute delay. Then shoe-horned onto a shuttle bus because the Gatwick transit is being repaired. Finally reached the first class lounge waiting for a BA flight to Jersey. Almost delayed boarding because the photo machine had broken down at the security check before the gates and we had to produce identification to get passed. However, we were first onto the plane only to find our seats had been moved - we no longer had the two seats behind the curtain and now had someone sitting between us.
Short but bumpy flight. Taxi to our accommodation (the Liberty Apartments). Off out to get some wine and burger and chips to take back to the, very smart, apartment. The apartment has modern furniture in the lounge and bedroom, well-fitted bathroom and kitchen which is fully equipped. There was also a “welcome basket” of snacks, cereals, teas, coffees and even milk, orange juice and other soft drinks in the fridge. The block is centrally situated in the centre of St Helier and we were automatically upgraded to a marina view. It is obviously geared towards longish-stay business visitors and during the week is expensive but at the weekend it was cheaper than the Radisson where we originally booked and also has much more space and better facilities.
Saturday 10th October
For breakfast free, fresh croissants and coffee were available in the reception.
Took the bus from Liberation bus station (one of the cleanest and most modern I’ve seen) to Mont Orgueil Castle. Then back to St Helier to see the largest steam clock in the world. It’s not what I expected. I thought it would be a down-market Monte Carlo. I got an upmarket Blackpool.
Sunday 11th October.
Took the Island Explorer bus to the War Tunnels museum, which is housed in the tunnels dug during the German occupation of the islands in the Second World War. Very well laid out and informative - well worth a visit.
Back to St Helier for coffee at The Royal Yacht followed by lunch at the Pomme d’Or hotel, overlooking the marina. Expensive but worth it. Old-style silver service carvery.
Taxi to the airport well in time for a rest in the BA lounge before our flight home.
